Meet some students.
Eleven years old, Akansha Maurya was in 6th grade last year. With three children in the family, her father passed away some time ago. Her mother never did receive any education, but Akansha studies English, Hindi, math, science, Sanskrit, and geography. She especially loves science, and wants to be a doctor. Her other dream is to try to eliminate pollution. Akansha plans to continue at least through 12th grade at GMV then apply to medical school.
Shreya Mishra, left, is working on a BA in Psychology. Shreya wants to be like Dr. Anu, an outstanding psychology professor here. Shreya says, “If I had not come here, my life would be bad. I would be married and have no life of my own." Shiwangi Singh, right, came to the school in 5th grade and is now at the college studying zoology. Like other girls, she will have an arranged marriage, but after finishing school and getting a job. "In every way, this school has changed me," she says.
Neha Mishra has graduated from high school. Her father is deceased and her mother had an 8th-grade education. So Neha wants to go on to receive a Bachelor's degree--and then to find a way to educate poor children without charging them any fee.
Swati Gupta and Sunaina Singh are 2nd-year Bachelor of Science students. They both attended middle and high school at GMV. Swati says she is “living her dreams that we talked about" when Friend of the School Marilyn Johnson first came here, helping her believe she can become somebody. Her dream is to do post-graduate work, get a job, and then get married. Here the two are on Convocation Day, when they danced in the program.
